Former British resident Binyam Mohamed arrives back in Britain tomorrow after his release from Guantanamo Bay. British and US lawyers claim that sustained beatings - which have only recently stopped - have left him with severe psychological and physical problems.
Guantanamo Judge Denies Obama's Request for Delay

A military judge threw a wrench yesterday into the Obama administration's plan to suspend legal proceedings at Guantanamo Bay, denying the government's request to delay the case of a detainee accused of planning the 2000 attack on the USS Cole.

Fast Day 8 - two vigils

Today, Sunday, 8 of us joined the throngs going to the Inaugural concert on the Mall. However, rather than sporting Obama tee shirts, flags and posters, seven of us wore orange jumpsuits and black hoods and one wore a "Shut Guantanamo" tee shirt. The reception from the celebratory crowd was surprisingly positive with nearly everyone offering supportive comments and taking thousands of photos of our little band marching through the crowd in silent procession. One highlight of the concert itself (with top Hollywood and musical stars) was Pete Seeger at the end singing some of the more radical verses from "This Land is My Land" with Bruce Springsteen.

Friday, January 16. Temperature: less than 20 degrees. After a brief vigil at Dupont Circle, about two dozen fasters processed to the White House to join a vigil already in progress that what organized by Dorothy Day House.
